Sep 17, Anne rated it liked it. Good enough story but too short for me. Dec 15, Christina rated it really liked it. Interesting story, some choices made it less effective but i don't regret reading it As I believe was intended, this reads like a fairy tale.
I enjoyed it a lot and was continually intrigued and interested in what would happen next. I do think it would have been more effective if different scenes had been chosen to be slowed down--"shown". Since most of the story was "told" in a summary, these choices of what to "show" did make me feel less for the characters. What I love about this short story is that it is a complete cosmos of its own. I feel the fullness of this universe. This is the stuff of myths: Gods, Goddesses, Their Offspring, and lamented Tragedy. Immortal twins Kismet and Taso are used to sparring, but when they find a sword their father has left behind, Kismet makes a blow to his brother that pierces not just flesh but Taso's very immortality.
Their mother turns Taso into a stone, his spouting blood a spring, to prevent his complete death. Kismet leaves to live a life poisoned by the loss of his brother. When eventually he finally learns to love again, it is to remember the pain of loss again. Leads logically into the next book TAGS: This is a pretty cool little short story. It concerns two brothers, sons of gods, who are horsing around one day when something terrible happens.
One of the brothers winds up going down to Earth, and ruling his country with an iron fist. It's pretty well written, and a wonderful introduction to the author's fantasy world. If I had any issues with it, it would be that the formatting of the ebook that I read on Scribd leaves a little to be desired. Firstly, there's lots of front-matter to get through, mostly praise for the author and the story, before I even get to read the thing.
Secondly, there isn't really a proper table of contents, which I find frustrating when I have to decide when to stop reading for a session. All in all, I enjoyed it. It's described as romance, which I don't normally enjoy. The thing is, while there are some romantic elements in it, I personally wouldn't put it in that genre. I'm off to go find the next one! Mar 18, Jennette Powell rated it it was amazing. This short story is a delightful prequel to Kismet's Kiss, giving the reader a bit of background information on how that world was shaped.
It follows the young god Kismet as he challenges his competitive twin brother, and the disastrous results thereof, then takes the reader on a fanciful journey where we get to see how some of the culture developed in the land of Kad while also seeing the very human frailties of an immortal being. Swords and Scimitars is a fairy-tale-like adventure that will entertain even readers new to the series. Another worthy installment from an author who's become an auto-buy for this reader! Aug 27, namericanwordcat rated it liked it Shelves: In this prequel to the fantasy series, we have excellent mythos building. This very much has the tone and feeling of an origin story from any culture.
The world building is well done. There is a nice weave of romance here but it is mor in the line of romantic element than a romance. The story would have been more captivating if we had gotten the romance. Never the less, I am intrigued with this world and will read on. I was given this book for my honest review.
So there you have it! Mar 16, Kayla Shettel rated it liked it. Good short story I was disappointed with how short the story was. It read to fast but it was a good read. I wish there had been more details, it was like the entire middle of the story was missing. A charming story well developed and with engaging characters.

A world to revisit. Not really a short story, more like a recap of events. Still, it's interesting to read if you're invested in this world via the other books. Saba has spent her whole life in Silverlake, a dried-up wasteland ravaged by constant sandstorms. The Wrecker civilization has long been destroyed, leaving only landfills for Saba and her family to scavenge from. Lugh is captured, and Saba embarks on a quest to get him back. Suddenly thrown into the lawless, ugly reality of the world outside of desolate Silverlake, Saba is lost without Lugh to guide her.
So perhaps the most surprising thing of all is what Saba learns about herself: She has the power to take down a corrupt society from the inside. Teamed up with a handsome daredevil named Jack and a gang of girl revolutionaries called the Free Hawks, Saba stages a showdown that will change the course of her own civilization. Blood Red Road has a searing pace, a poetically minimal style, violent action, and an epic love story. Moira Young is one of the most promising and startling new voices in teen fiction.

Martin James has no such desire, but after being injected with a mysterious drug against his will, Martin hurtles through the years.
This cruel twist of fate forces him to watch his children grow up and his wife grow old in a matter of days. Only an elusive group of scientists have the ability to stop his nightmarish journey; the very people who injected him in the first place. And while Martin James hopes to find a cure before everyone he loves is gone, others are uncertain if his journey can be stopped at all.
Lawrence weaves a future history filled with the best and worst of humanity, highlights the blessings and curses of technology, and pushes the limits of faith and hopelessness. Above all, Syncing Forward is a tale of one man's love for his family, and their devotion to saving him from being lost forever. Syncing Forward 1 of 7. Syncing Forward 2 of 7. Fantasy The third volume of the high fantasy saga that began with A Game of Thrones and continued in A Clash of Kings is one of the more rewarding examples of gigantism in contemporary fantasy.
As Martin's richly imagined world slides closer to its year winter, both the weather and the warfare worsen. With the aid of a peasant wench, Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer, escapes from jail in Riverrun. Meanwhile, in the south, Queen Daenarys tries to assert her claim to the various thrones with an army of eunuchs, but discovers that she must choose between conquering more and ruling well what she has already taken.
The complexity of characters such as Daenarys, Arya and the Kingslayer will keep readers turning even the vast number of pages contained in this volume, for the author, like Tolkien or Jordan, makes us care about their fates. Those two fantasy greats are also evoked by Martin's ability to convey such sensual experiences as the heat of wildfire, the chill of ice, the smell of the sea and the sheer gargantuan indigestibility of the medieval banquet at its most excessive.
Perhaps this saga doesn't go as far beyond the previous bounds of high fantasy as some claim, but for most readers it certainly goes far enough to command their attention. A Storm of Swords part1. A Storm of Swords part2.
